monsoons

sunday nite. coffee shop. my last nite with the kids this week...
we dint really do much this weekend, went to see Sky High friday nite, it was ok.
(and i missed lulu's blog-wedding in vegas, sorry, sorry, sorry)

monsoons have been nice so far, hot, humid, sticky, oppressive days, cool nites (when we get lucky midtown and it rains thru our part of the heat-bubble shield).

*sigh*

be bold

sitting in the coffeehaus, goofing, slacking, reading blogs...
b. comes in, says hi, goes and makes himself an iced latte of some kind (he works here, so it's expected), then comes over and sits down.

we talk a bit, ask how each others life is going, etc.
he's up, i'm a bit down.

"be bold" - he says.
"know that you are the shit" - he says.
"believe that you deserve good things, and right effen now" - he says.
and about 15 minutes more of some very inspirational shit.

and, i needed that.

he's 22. i'm 41. and i just got told.
thanks b.

three ay em

yes, i said 3am.
woke up. couldn't sleep. hadn't slept well all nite.
so, i got up and finished the "harry potter".
(the one i bought for my daughter)

that's not why i couldn't sleep,
probly shouldn't do a breath of fire meditation before bed,
actually...

j.k. rowling - you are fabulous!
i hate that i finished the book already,
that i'm done, and that i know what happened now.
and that there isn't another book out, right now, to feed my need.

j.k. you are my crack, my crank, my dragon, i need you, baby.

ah well, maybe i'll just start over, lol.

a plethora

Jefe: We have stuffed many pinatas for your birthday celebration!

El Guapo: How many pinatas?

Jefe: Many pinatas, many!

El Guapo: Jefe, would you say I have a plethora of pinatas?

Jefe: Yes... You have a plethora.

El Guapo: Jefe, what is a plethora?

Jefe: Why, El Guapo?

El Guapo: 'Cause you told me that I have a plethora. and I just would like to know if you know what a plethora is. I would not like to think that a person would tell someone he has a plethora and find out that
person has no idea what it means to have a plethora.

Jefe: Forgive me, El Guapo. I know that I, Jefe, do not have your superior intellect and education, but could it be that you're mad about something else and looking to take it out on me?

somedays, that is exactly what i'm thinkin...
:|

oh, on another, less boring note; the twins and i went to see "the bad news bears" this afternoon, and it was good. they did a pretty good job of staying true to the original, and billy bob made a great "buttermaker". nice additions to the whole thing were the hooters chicks & strippers from bo peeps (hard to distinguish these here). all in all a good romp, although i had to field a few questions & looks from the kids... hollywood is pandering to the single-dad crowd now, i think... we have the power, we have the power!

some fav sites for pics of the day:

yeah, i'm kinda bored...

cause and effect

Desert sandstorm heads toward Florida
- i guess things have shifted in the weather patterns a little, as the dustclouds from africa usually go toward the caribbean, i think.
- warmth from a hurricane core? causing a heatwave? - huh?

i still haven't looked into some things to look up later, cuz i've been an uber-slacker lately, reading harry potter, and playing with a new website, and lazy stuff like that...

just to refresh:
here are some links that i've been reading, and thinking about. at least, whenever i see some strange weather phenomena, i start thinking about it... there are some interesting issues of cause and effect across the global environment, and these links kinda show where i'm going, in regard to the closed system entities, such as the several ocean oscillations, the jet stream, the volcanic activity, and any other crap i can throw in, such as the butterfly effect, lol.

burning both ends

once again, even tho i don't give a wit about politics, i have been distracted by a couple of things dubya, or his posse, has done or said:

House Votes for a Permanent Patriot Act
- ahh, the sweet smell of liberty being napalmed in the morning...

and on the other side of the candle:
Ex-CIA Officers Rip Bush Over Rove Leak
- don't ask for loyalty folks, that train left the station a long time ago...

and this exerpt, from yahoo news (testimony of James Marcinkowski):
"Understandable to all Americans is a simple, incontrovertible, but damning truth: the United States government exposed the identity of a clandestine officer working for the CIA. This is not just another partisan "dust-up" between political parties. This unprecedented act will have far-reaching consequences for covert operations around the world. Equally disastrous is that from the time of that first damning act, we have continued on a course of self-inflicted wounds by government officials who have refused to take any responsibility, have played hide-and-seek with the truth and engaged in semantic parlor games for more than two years, all at the expense of the safety of the American people. No government official has that right."
- all hope abandon ye who enter here... that's on the frontdoor of someplace, no?

and on a lighter note, from back in 2004, but still funny:
George Bush Assigns White House Staff New Nicknames
- "shut your piehole, fuckface", lol...

friday confessional

once upon a time, when i lived in the cul-de-sac, some of the other kids from the block and i used to play with fire. and everything associated with fire. and we had this cool little 2 story clubhouse, which was about 5 ft. square, and about 8 ft. tall. we had stolen a bunch of pallets and old vegetable crates from behind the grocerystore, and straightened a ton of nails from a construction site, and built this thing.

man, it was the coolest. one of the kids had found some old playboys in a trashcan in the alley, and i would steal packs of cigarettes from my mom, and we'd go into the clubhouse and smoke, drinking cokes and googling the playboys. we had other shit in there too, normal boy-stuff i guess, but we had alot of cigarettes and matches and playboys (maybe a couple of penthouse too, it's been a few years).

one time, one of the guys found a bunch of 22 shells, and he'd heard you could make it into a bomb, by pulling out the bullet, and pushing some paper into the shell, to keep the powder in. so, we setup his dads table vise, and we used some plyers to yank out the bullets of a couple of shells, and we stuffed paper into them.

then, we took them out into the alley, with one of the rattiest playboys, and we made a little bonfire in one of the wheelruts in the alley (garbage trucks and all of us kids on bikes used to travel the alleys, leaving two distinct ruts). and then we threw the shells into the little bonfire, and we all ran...

well, we ran into the backyard, and we kinda peeked out thru the cracks in the woodfence, but couldn't really see anything. and then we heard a bang, and then another, and laughing we all ran back out to the alley to check it out.

and, arizona alleys in summer have alot of dead grass, and i mean like hip high on a fourth grade kid grass, and when we ran out there we ran into a fire... and we all stopped laughing, and start shouting "fire! fire!", and the old guy who lived in back of us came out of his house, having heard the shots, and us yelling, and of course he starts yelling at us. and we're all jumping around and yelling and trying to kick the fire out, cuz we know we are gonna get our asses beat if we don't put it out.

and the old guy starts laughing and grabs his hose, and sprays it all down, including us, and puts it all out, and he's laughing his ass off at us, cuz we must've looked like a bunch of monkeys jumping around and kicking at the flaming grass, and yelling "fire". he just puts it out, and yells "you stoopid kids!" once more, and goes back inside laughing and shaking his head...

and we're all standing there, middle of the blackened alley, wide-eyed and looking at each other, with soot on us, and a little wet from the hose, and not one peep comes out, and we all take off in different directions, straight for home...

stole a little life meme

life meme:

10 years ago:
writing software (autolisp) for a GIS company, married, new father of twins... play doom after work occasionally.

5 years ago:
writing java for a wireless company, separated, twins were in kindergarten and growing fast... doing a little work on the side, educational software, no games.

3 years ago:
building cabinets by hand with an old friend, never been happier or more satisfied. got back together with my wife, things are okay, but tense cuz of money-issues. kids are great...

1 year ago:
maintaining voice applications for a telephony software company, still together with my wife but not for long, kids are unhappy, she's unhappy, i'm unhappy. playing puzzle pirates until the wee hours, too often...

yesterday:
writing java software. divorce is filed. kids are happy. i'm happy.
started the new harry potter book. gave a ram dass book to a friend.

today:
reorganized the analysis & design model, and starting moving stuff into the implementation model in enterprise architect. didn't write any code. went to a couple of meetings where nothing was decided. had a greasy burger for lunch.
not my night with the kids, so i'll probly go do some yoga...

tomorrow:
continue reorging the EA stuff. no other plans.
me and the kids will either do a movie or dinner out...

work and play

i don't talk about work here, if i can help it.
it's not that my work is boring, or that i don't have things to say about it.
but i'd rather leave it there...

blogs i read at work are technical, sites like the server side, jroller, and twilleager.

those aren't frequently visited, just today.
most of the time, i'll google some subject that i'm working on at the moment, like java collections, or some such, and click around until i find something good.

so, enuff of that work shtuff...
go play.

fall of the republic

i noticed that craig commented on Rubicon, and the fall of the republic, parallelling (sp?) our times... i've been wanting to read jared diamond's Collapse myself, after reading Guns, Germs, and Steel.

exquisite porcelain turds

i was reading a book on meditation yesterday afternoon before yoga, not in my zen rock garden, sipping herbal tea, but, on the john...

and, it came to me, as i read the beautiful quotes and flowery words; about bliss, emptiness, trancendance, flowing water, and calm; that it is all crap...
pretty crap, true, arranged nicely into pleasing forms & gentle rhythms.
still, it's crap.

exquisite porcelain turds.

slight hangover

made a call to see if a girl would like to do something after work, left a message, then talked with a friend who was going over to another friends to drink beer, and swim in the pool, and i agreed to go, picked up a twelve-pack of new castle and went over, leaving my phone in the truck, by accident, and missing the return phonecall, and therefore, the girl...

happy fourth!

our cul-de-sac was very close to a shopping mall that sponsored fireworks for about 5 years when i was a kid. and people used to drive from all over to hang out in our neighborhood and watch the show. it was always pretty fun. people even cleaned up after themselves. funny.

have a good one, be responsible, on this beautiful independance day.

remember it's about independance, and the fight against tyranny.

books & blogs

so, a small frustration raised its head today.
when i updated my blog template, i wasn't thinking, and dint save off the old one with all the cool links to books & blogs & etc, that i had saved...

from that thought, i began to try to remember the blogs that i liked, and how exactly would i search for them on google? sure, google has cool facilities for searching a single website, and for the whole effen net, but how would i search just blogspace?

a dilemma.

and another arises, in regard to books. not exactly searching for books, but for the topics they cover, and sometimes just the gist of the story...
again, google has a cool tool, but not exactly what i, some whining slacker, need, again...

and a third, in regard to all the knowledge on the net. it is rare to find some persons opinion, with footnotes, or a glossary, or references, no? it would be cool to point a google at a page, and ask it to wikify it... and you would get all this extra info, maybe give it a b.s.-o-matic monitor too? (yesh, i've heard that we are now creating more info in a day, blahblahblah)

google is great. google is good. amen.

update: arethusa is correct, technorati is cool, and close to what i want... but, again, not exactly, lol... (whining intentional)

sunny sunday #3

me and the boy are at the coffeeshop:
he's playing speed with various barristas, customers, and me (when he asks, only when he's bored)...
when i'm not playing cards with him, i'm goofing on the puter, as usual...

dead battery

so, my battery in my truck died the other nite.

of course, i know the heat killed it, as phoenix heat typically kills your battery every two years, on average. but, it was under interesting circumstances, and vengeful gods seemed to be smiting me.

angry electrical gods.

i was supposed to go pick up my kids after work, and my kidlette wanted to stay at her friends for an additional nite, and i said no. well, some drama ensued. phonecalls were made to mom, etc. it got a bit frustrating, and i ended up driving halfway across town to pick her up, and to make up for being a mean daddy, i volunteered to take them to the QT for freezees. this went over fairly well, and i was feeling better. we walked out to the truck, got in, turned the key, and gzzzztgzzzzt, tingting, it's dead.

to make a long, somewhat tedious, story - short... i gave another guy and his daughter who's van was out of gas $20 to get home (trying to get some good karma, now), and had to call my ex for a jump, and then a ride to get a new battery, and then go back for some frickin tools.

and it all worked out fine, and then the kidlette got dropped off back at her friends, as she wanted, to assuage the gods, and appease their anger...

friendly doggy

went for a walk this morning, felt kinda tight all over from yoga the other nite...

and, i'm about halfway, and i see the lady and her dog coming toward me on the path. she's struggling a bit with the dog, a big black lab, as he's obviously strong. so, as we get to a certain distance, which i kinda think of as "a dogs sphere of influence and protectivity", he starts pulling too hard for this old lady, and she...

wait for it...

she... drops... the... leash.

and this beautiful big black friendly doggy bolts straight for... me.

now i happen to love dogs, and especially black & chocolate labs, but, hey! don't effen drop the leash!!! on a public path, with some big ugly guy walking toward you and your instinctively protective, yet sweet tempered, dog.

so, i held out my arms and yelled come here! and he responded, but i could tell that if i had done something else, he was ready to play that too. he wouldn't let me touch him, but i picked up his leash, and handed it back to the lady...
(who explained that her dog must've thought he knew me to act like that, riiiight)

he's a friendly doggy, he is, really.

hot yoga

i went to yoga class for the first time in over a year, on monday nite.

when i was waiting for the previous class to end, i was surprised and delighted to see my patchouli friend come walking in. she dint see me, and so i just watched as she signed in, walked around the displays a bit, then sat down to wait. she looked mad. after a couple of minutes she noticed me watching her from behind the yoga pants, and dint quite recognize me ( i shaved my head & grew a goatee ). then, as realization dawned in her face, she slowly smiled.

and THAT, my dear droogies, is the MOST BEAUTIFUL sunrise i've seen in a long time.

we talked for a little bit, and her patchouli etched another groove in my brain, and then we each went our separate ways into class, where i proceeded to sweat most of my ass off (came back later when i drank water).

at then end of class, i had the yoga bliss going, and dint see my friend when she left, but it was a beautiful nite, all in all...

bright sunday

another hot, bright, sunday, yay!

and it's hot, baby, H.O.T. - hot!
and i know hot, cuz i've lived here in phoenix, since the day i was born, and i used to walk around barefoot in the summers (ooh, aaah, ooh, aaaaaaaaah, ooh, ooh, ow, aaaaah - is how it sounds, you can picture it in your head if you like). and i was working at a techshop when it was over 120 for a week in july, and all the ACs broke down except the one over the receptionist.

and i like it hot.

ever had sex and you get all slippery from sweat? and your body starts making fartle-noises from all the slipping, sliding, and slapping? ever fall off? man, that is fun!

and then you both lay there, and you don't touch cuz yer both hot, and cuz you both want maximum air-exposure, and you kinda laugh about falling off, and fartling...

ever walk into the grocery store, after driving around in the 110+ heat for awhile with the windows down, and as you stroll into nicely air-conditioned store: boing! your nips get hard? and then, you kinda head straight to the frozen aisle? me too!

and, sometimes, when you go for a slurpee (icee, slushee), and as you take the first really big sip, the frozo-head-ache smacks you in the sinuses... ow, that's a pain, but frought with summer-memories, no? yes!!!

ahh, the joys of summer, on a sunny sunday...
;)

btw, i'm drinking coffee, hot coffee...

eminent domain - wtf?

ahhh, another shining example of corporate-backed gov't in action. somehow i doubt this is good news for "we, the people". isn't greed a sin? and gluttony, that's there too... "best interests" - my ass.

gonna have to "rise up" someday soon, i suppose...

the monastery - r.i.p.

went to the monastery last nite...

this is their last week, at that location (two others exist), and it was kinda cool / kinda sad. i was meeting a friend, and since she was a little late, i sat and had a bass with some of the folks at the bar, and got the whole story.

i guess this particular location isn't earning alot of money, and with the price of real estate going completely effin nutz here in phoenix, the owners can make a sweet deal on the land.

but i will miss it. i used to go to the "old" monastery off 48th street (by the canal) to play volleyball, get drunk, etc, and when they moved to this location, i followed. continuing the sandball, drinking, meeting interesting people trend.

so, last nite, i thought it would be fun to hang out with my friend there (she plays ball, too, occasionally). but, i didn't expect the melancholy that came upon me, sitting there at the bar with "the regulars", and hearing the small stories of what they had planned now. it's a beautiful thing, sometimes, to just listen to other people talk about their plans...

we left after i faux paux'd my beer all over the table courtside... trying to ward off a stray ball intent on spilling said beer... knuckled it away, then elbowed said almost-full glass in an interesting spill pattern headed for her lap. sometimes the jump-up from the spill does more damage than the actual spill, but we were lucky.

sigh, didn't even play in the sand...

american quotes

always liked thomas jefferson...
and this site of american quotes is pretty interesting, especially the fates of the signers of the declaration...
quotegarden is cool, too.

here are a few quotes that strike me (and for some reason i'm thinking about big money and gynormous bureaocracy today):

"The money powers prey upon the nation in times of peace and conspire against it in times of adversity. It is more despotic than a monarchy, more insolent than autocracy, and more selfish than bureaucracy. It denounces as public enemies, all who question it's methods or throw light upon it's crimes. I have two great enemies, the Southern Army in front of me and the Bankers in the rear. Of the two, the one at my rear is my greatest foe.. corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money powers of the country will endeavor to prolong it's reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in the hands of a few, and the Republic is destroyed."
- Abraham Lincoln

"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

"A little rebellion now and then is a good thing..."
- Thomas Jefferson

"Say nothing of my religion. It is known to my god and myself alone."

WWBD?

if you could cure cancer, or diabetes, would you?
or, would you hide that knowledge, suppress it until you had figured out how to dilute that cure, so you could manage the disease, without curing it?

if someone came to you with a problem, and you could fix it, would you? or, would get get a bunch of friends together, to study the problem, a committee? and this committee would take on a life of its own, keeping the problem alive, studying it, controlling it, but never actually fixing it?

if you could stop a fight, would you do that?
or, would you sell one of the guys a stick, and after he gets hit, sell the other guy a bigger stick, etc, etc. or maybe you'd just sell tickets?

WWBD?

simon of space

so, i'm just goofing off, right?

and, i'm clicking around, reading blogs that i enjoy and sipping some herbal tea (don't start with me, i need a donut). AND, i keep going back to a couple of favorites from the column to the right there (--->) BUT, they haven't been updated in a while, and i notice, "hey," i said to myself, "hey self, these folk actually have OTHER blogs", which i hadn't noticed before, cuz sometimes i'm observant, and sometimes i'm NOT... especially if i haven't had my donut, and my stoopid grin is hurting my face.

so, go look at simon of space, and follow the links to his other work... (this is the "the darth side" dood).

now, if jen would only begin anew...

debian & donuts

wil says debian has released a new version. which i mention just becuz i'm a bit tired, and have virtually nothing to write about.

i installed debian linux once, and it had this incredible network install, which still amazes me to this day. sure, the downloading of stuff to your box is pretty fantastic stuff these days, but this was quite a while back. they mailed me a single 3.5" floppy, which i pop'd into my box, and being hooked up the the net, i executed the install, and OH MY GAWD! - things start downloading and my box starts making this incredible I'M EATING THIS UP kinda noise (hard-drives sound like aeroplanes sometimes, and sometimes they sound like other things, sure-sure).

it was an epiphanic moment for me (is that even a word?)...

tired you ask? well, there is something i could mention, as i stayed up until about 3am this morning, and it was fun, but i'm fairly discreet, so that's all i'm gonna say about that... other than i can't get the big, fat, stoopid grin off my face...

hmmm, what else? crystal method was playing at myst last nite, i dint go. the stones (yes, the actual rolling stones!) are coming in november - should i take my kids? i think i should.

there was this video game i played last nite, that is the japanese police force first-person-shooter arcade game, that detects your movements and responds accordingly in the game, and you have to actually squat down, and move or lean to the side, and shoot, and i think i could get into killer shape if i just played that effed up game just once a nite... maybe if i played it once a week? sheee-ittt, my thighs feel like i just played 90 minutes of soccer.

and my face hurts cuz of this stoopid grin...

anyone seen this guy? Posted by Hello

and i'm really looking for him, this was something i drew my last year in college, and gave to a friend of mine for a wedding present. Which turned out to be a bad idea, as the last time i saw it, it was hidden behind the door in their den.

(someone told me once, *never* give art as a present, it never evokes the same emotion in the givee as it does in the giver. this was long after i foolishly gave away al).

if you pick it up at a yardsale somewhere in phoenix, send me an email, i'm inclined to get it back...

five kittens!

received the kitten call at 2am this morning, *yawn*

so, i went and woke up the twins, and we raced over to my ex's to witness the miracle of birth, as performed by by our little calico: Kali.

results: 5 hungry, happy little bundles of fluff, wow, they're tiny!
2 tabbys, 2 blacks, and 1 new calico!!
the kids kept commenting on how like fear factor this whole experience was, especially the chowing down on the afterbirth, in between each birth. the little momma is healthy and happy too. instinct is absolutely amazing...

i need a nap.

the Other coffeehaus

okay, i'm sitting in the *other* location of my favorite coffeehaus...
is this cheating?

it basically has the same ambiance, and free wifi, and it's very comfortable. more chairs and couches, less tables-for-two-or-three. all together a nice experience.

today i'm playing dads-taxi-service, a rather-involved real-time game for single-dads on their weekends-with-the-kids. i dropped them off at a birthday-swim-party, and it's on this side of town, so i figure, go to a coffee-shop and surf-the-net, as usual...
(holy hyphenation, batman)

actually it wasn't my weekend, last weekend was mine, but i got a call from my ex, at about 7ish last nite, saying "when are you gonna pick up the twins?".

see, there was a conversation earlier in the week about her wanting to take them camping on one of my weekends, and apparently i missed the part about "oh, and this weekend is yours". typical.

{rant}
see, an all-too-common ritual in my marriage was "didn't you hear me tell you...", which i've always thought was funny, becuz i can't read minds (yet, i figured i would eventually learn how to do that, as i kept getting lots of practice). but, i'm a fairly good listener, using active "uh huhs", "yes, dears", and "what you said, what i heard" techniques as a rule. so, i don't remember tuning anything out... but somehow there were huge amounts of conversation that were occurring betwixt her and i (in some dimension), that i was missing.

my latest theory is that she knows that i will cancel plans, bail out on friends, and give up all kinds of things, just to hang out with my kids, anytime, anywhere, at a moments notice...
{/rant}

oh, just one more thing: match.com sucks.

stiff neck

yup, stiff neck today, played too much FIFA street the past few days.

THL had a couple of fun posts. one about batteries, and one about a roomates parasite. both ultimately make me think of my stiff neck, or times in the past when i've had a stiff neck. maybe all things lead to a stiff neck?

work. should i even mention it? i suppose i won't ever understand the people who require a little extra drama in their lives. things seem to be going smoothly, most of the teams are just hitting their stride, and code is beginning to be produced on a daily basis. it's the beginning of a construction cycle, things are happening, situations are arising, and problems are being solved... suddenly, a senior manager begins to think she needs to find a silver bullet to solve the entire organizations issues. bang, zoom! to the moon... (shaking my head, yes i am).

patchouli. i keep thinking about it. last week, at my friendly neighborhood coffeehaus, a friend came in, and i gave her a hug when we saw each other. all very nice and innocent... anyway, for the rest of the day, all day, at work, i keep smelling patchouli... and i'm getting aroused, cuz i love the smell of that oil. especially since it's all mixed up with memories of sex, and memories of women who wore it, and memories of the smell of the women who wore it...
mmhmmm, patchouli...

heat. phoenix heat. beautiful heat.
i was born here, so it doesn't bother me when it hits 100 (121 is a different matter, entirely). i actually love to drive around with the windows down, middle of the day, hot air blowing and evaporating the sweat off me. my frontal lobes must've melted a bit...

wikipedia wonderfulness

okay, i like wikipedia alot. maybe, becuz i had this thing for encyclopedias when i was a kid, i dunno. but, it's amazingly consuming to sit and explore the site. pick a word, something obscure, and search for it...

you might find another word, which makes you laugh, or gives you an AHA moment. like earworm did for me this morning.

short meme

a very short meme, inspired by listening to green day on the way home from work:

to find: to find myself at the end.
to run: to run like i'm flying.
to dance: to dance like i'm meditating.
to live: to live like there's no tomorrow.
to die: to die for something.
to think: to think of others.
to believe: to believe in myself.

momo gizmodo

check out the door handles at gizmodo today!!! think they would look good in the eichler, gayle?

and i loved the idea of the roomba when it came out,
and the scooba is pretty nifty too.

gizmodo is shweet...
(and what geek wouldn't love a humanoid love pillow?)
:)

coming in threes

ha, i'd like to come in threes!
*slap* ooooh, thanks.

okay, i stole this idea from SQMojo (luvyaluvyaluvya):

Three names you go by:
quipsodelic
torqt
erromango

Three screen names you have had:
uh, redundant, yes.

Three physical things you like about yourself:
chest, butt, feet

Three parts of your heritage:
unicolor kilts, drinking beer, invading other countries & stealing their women

Three things that scare you:
being left behind
suffocating
turning off the flashlights while we are amateur spelunking in the grand canyon
(oh yes, there is a story, yes there is)

Three things you're wearing now:
shoes, pants, shirt

Three of your favorite bands or musical artist:
redhotchilipeppers
the doors
green day

Three of your favorite songs:
danny boy, the immigrant song, & rock of ages

Three things you want in a relationship:
love, friendship, passion

Two truths and a lie (which one is a lie?):
i've spent the night in jail
i've read the bible cover to cover
i've jumped out of planes

Three physical things about the preferred sex that appeal to you:
their smell, taste, & touch

Three of your favorite hobbies:
reading
hiking
soccer

Three things you want to do badly right now:
play guitar
paint
sex
(not necessarily in that order)

Three careers you're considering:
artist, cabinetmaker, fisherman

Three places you want to go on vacation:
ireland, new zealand, rhode island

Three kids' names you like:
my kids names...

Three things you want to do before you die:

Three celebrity crushes:
okay, bored with this, i am...

open mic

last nite was open mic at the coffeehaus i frequent.
it was fun, my weekends without the kids are usually pretty tame, i'm basically a boring dood, or at least i think of myself that way.

the open mic was advertised as a poetry jam, but turned out more musical. i dint participate, but it got me in a creative mood, so here it goes, my braindump:

first, a coupla mentions of enjoyable rants:
dicks, pussies, and assholes
and
woman, W.O.M.A.N., Whoaaaaa, Man!
hehe

and now me:

There is no comfort in Change.
but, also there is no Learning,
in
the
steady
drone
of
Peace.
So, go, with Love,
and find your own Clarity.

retro eighties chick,
naked, sweating, under her
london fog raincoat.

if, in the end, i find only me,
after this journey.
i will be far richer,
than the me who was giving himself away,
in unloving relationships and ritual jobs daily.
and infinitely richer than
the compromising and wheedling masses
who strive for ill-meaning gains.

i found myself the other day.
came around the corner, carrying a hangover,
and slipped on something wet,
looking up i caught myself, in a window.
and it had been a long time
since we had seen each other.

was i staring?
sorry, i didn't realize.
and i've been told my gaze is piercing,
and disturbing, and i shouldn't stare.
i just thought you were beautiful.

laugh at me, you will not.

um, this is yoda?
he seems funnier on screen, i suppose. not quite as enjoyable as the darth side, but maybe that says something about me? hehe

oh, and lippert had some brief stuff on why yoda speaks the way he does. ( i think he's just trying to avoid being id'd as kermit.d.frog, cuz i think miss piggy still has a hit out on him, and the witness protection folks will be pissed if he gives himself away and they have to relocate him again ).

i think the face bending quality of that electrical force stuff probly accounts for kermit looking like yoda now, just take a look at the emperor. face-melting force, it is. ( yes, my theory breaks down at the ears, i know, but maybe... nevermind ).

shmeducation?

i don't know if that's a word or not. i was trying to mix shmuck + education. and it is in reference to the lack of, not education, but learning i suppose, that is rampant in the recruiters calling me lately. (if you are a recruiter, sorry, but go read a few pages in a book or blog about some of the buzzwords you are using. i may be just some database hit from a search, but c'mon, due-diligence is just a link away).

the last three calls, especially, left me with that car-salesman shudder.

go look here, to start (in no particular order):

at least nobody is saying cobra, when they mean CORBA, these days...

conflicting paradigms

at work earlier this week, a bunch of us started planning to go see star wars on opening day, taking off work like a good bunch of software geeks, and costing our company some unknown amount of productivity, and therefore, money.

it didn't quite work out that way, exactly, several people went to the *first* showing at 12:01am thursday morning (wed. nite to me), and a small group of us (including me and my twins) went to the matinee showing after leaving work early. and the leftovers went on thursday nite, at various times, with various significant others.

but that's just the backgrounder on the question that i came up with prior to the moviegoings ons. is it possible to be a fan of star wars, star trek, & l.o.t.r - all at the same time? (i feel that i am able to enjoy each of them).

and i was answered, resoundingly, that it was impossible. and this kicked off an enjoyable debate-slash-banter about the merits of jedi-robes vs. dunedin-robes, and laser-swords vs. enchanted-swords vs. phasers, and elf-chicks vs. alien-chicks, and not-to-forget hairy feet vs. pointy-ears (both kinds). oh, and the costume-combinations that might be acceptable, if and when you were crossing genres.
(somehow i should probly feel guilty for instigating this at work, but i don't).

i wonder when i will have this much fun again?
star wars vs. star trek vs. tolkein - it's kinda like mighty mouse versus superman, eh?
;))

roadless repeal

the more i try to ignore this administration, the more difficult it gets:
(this is from an email i rcv'd yesterday):

Background

The Bush administration's repeal of the roadless rule would allow many of President Bush's top campaign contributors in the timber, mining and oil industries to log, mine, and drill in pristine areas that provide 60 million Americans with clean drinking water and provide habitat for over 1600 endangered species. Even for an administration that has weakened so many environmental and public health protections, this action is extreme.

Their action comes even though the Forest Service has received more than 4 million comments in support of protecting America's last wild forests, including tens of thousands from people like you who we email each week - more than have ever been submitted on any rule making on any topic in the history of the United States.

The main hope right now to keep these forests safe for future generations is for governors to petition the Bush administration to keep roadless areas in their state protected. Some governors - like California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Washington Governor Christine Gregoire - have already indicated that they're open to the possibility of doing so.

But we've got to act quickly - there are more than 50 timber sales in roadless areas poised to go forward very soon. Please take a moment right now to ask your governor to do everything possible to save your state's last wild forests. Then - even if you've never done so before - ask your family and friends to help by forwarding this email along; there is no more important time to act.

To take action, click on this link or paste it into your web browser:

blame game

anyone else notice that dissension is being stifled by simply using the boilerplate phrase "fight terrorism" ? it rolls off the tongue sweetly and innocently, just like "in the interest of national security", don't you think?

jeebuzz, i'm not political in the slightest, but i keep seeing and hearing these talking heads using the most inane reasoning to justify their actions.

if that doesn't work, sir, blame the liberal media...

:(

lost it, again

i woke up, fast & wide, at about 2am this morning, something on my mind. something that seemed really important at the time, something urgent. and i wanted to write about it, to put it here in black & white. dammit.

now i can't remember, and i dint write it down, cuz i was so amp'd up by it, i figured i'd totally remember - this is THE SHTUFF.

dammit.

lung butter

i think the entire nation must be suffering from some form of, or phase in, an upper respiratory infection... i have some stuff that isn't causing me any greater stress than to occasionally hock up something gross & colorful. but others are also suffering from some relatives of this visitor.

wonder if all the aspergillus riding the african dustcloud is infecting more than the caribbean sea-fans? the hi rate of asthma in the caribbean was related to it. and the general direction of the airflow was north-westerly in the diagram. (this is all just supposition and extrapolation on my part of the national geographic tv show i saw last week sometime).

hmmm, is there a runny-nose smiley?
:~| maybe?
lol, laters

driving me nuts

here is a favorite joke (not just mine); a pirate walks into a bar...

hee hee, erm, i mean: yarrg!

prego kitty

okay, after learning that i have this spot, my kids say i have to announce the pregnancy of our kitty: Kali. (she is a calico, so it may be spelt either cali or, my preference, like the goddess).

yes, i am an easy mark. a push-over, if you will.
(and i have been known to buy things i don't need from pretty girls).

real id sneakiness

hrm, this is almost shockingly expected, that the "homeland" will now have "papers" on a national level. almost, i said. since nothing is new under the sun.

check it out here, and here, and thanks as always to wil, for pointing the way.

here is a small excerpt from the arstechnica article, which caused some shrinkage:

You can read more on the tinfoil hat implications of this here if you're interested, but I'll sum it up for you: Congress has crafted a completely unprecedented provision that guts the principle of judicial review by granting the DHS secretary complete and total immunity from the courts when it comes to the construction of "barriers and roads" in this one specific geographical region, and they've buried this provision inside a national ID card act which is itself attached to a large military appropriations bill that no Congressperson in their right mind would vote against (money for the troops and all that).

someone already said it, and i'm agreeing: "setting precedents...".

to my mom; all my love:
for all the things i don't say, for letting me make all my mistakes, for letting me fall, and fail, and fear. and for always being there afterwards.

everyone exhibited adequate manners and conversation, without any uncomfortable lapses.
all in all, a wonderful evening.

cellular envy

i have a cheap cricket cellular. it sucks. and it's only cheap in the sense of "quality", rather than price. sigh.

several of my co-workers and friends have some rather cool gizmos, which also work as a phone, but are equipped with such interstellar coolness that i am writhing in envy.

but, in true buddhist-monk fashion, i spout off how i'm uninterested in those new-fangled gadgets. that it tortures my soul that i must be connected to the world in any technical fashion. that i'm a "neo-luddite", or some such.

but, i have not conquered this daemon envy. yet.

i will.

maybe in the next lifetime...

darth, baby.

ooh, ooh, ooh!

it's darth, baby! bwaaahahahahaaaa!
who'd YOUR daddy? erm, fahthah.

the darth side

oh, yeah. i watched this "strange days" nat'l geo show on pbs last nite. it was very interesting, in a sensationalistic, yellow-journalism, sort of way. i'm sure most of the things in it are factual, but yet, they seem to be designed to scare me in some way, which i distrust.

and maybe i missed it, but they dint mention the antarctic ice-shelf melting. maybe they felt that was over-exposed? i doubt it.

some things to look up later:

  • tropical indian ocean warming

  • trans-atlantic oscillation

  • what event(s) follow dust events in the caribean?

  • what event(s) precede the north pacific warming cycle? (ring of fire?)

  • cause & effect in global environmental change

alphabet soup

random thoughts from things i'm reading and looking up on the net:

  • 26 letters in the english alphabet

  • 32 chars for teletypes (baudot code)

  • 128 chars in ascii

  • 27 letters in hebrew (22 basic + 5 final)

  • 21 letters in roman (latin)

  • 12 letters in hawaiian

  • 30-32 in sumerian (signed cuneiform)

  • 50 kanji in japanese

approximately 50 alphabets are in use today...

tor = thor = taw = thaur = tauros = taurus (approx.)

linguistically insignificant

Apparently Arizonan is Linguistically Insignificant

Your Linguistic Profile:

65% General American English

15% Upper Midwestern

10% Yankee

5% Dixie

5% Midwestern

and that is not surprising to me, since, as an arizonan-born, people who have lived here for years still call attention to me as an oddity.
( most of the kids i grew up with were either from illinois or minnesota, lol )

in my head

[chorus] sex. sex. sex. in my head, head, head.

everywhere i look, everything i hear, everyone i see.

sigh, something monty-python-esque about the whole thing...

helical soul

i've been having thoughts about past-lives, lately.

in the past, thru meditation, i became aware of some dreamish memories of myself dying in various ways thru-out history. i believe the violence of those deaths carries alot of energy, and are therefore more accessible to me in this life, as memories.

now, i've read that most religions have some belief in reincarnation, and that all references to it were removed from the bible by the council of nicea (not sure about that link).

so, what is this phenomena? is it some type of race-memory or instinct-like programming that is stored in our dna helix? supposedly there is some large percentage of our dna that is inactive.

if it's stored in our dna and passed down from generation to generation, then how come i am remembering moments-of-death? becuz if it's passed thru genetic material, and most people breed before they die (ha!), then how can anything after conception be passed on to succeeding generations?

there is another theory, that has to do with resonance and wavelengths of thought. and then there is, of course, soul-transfer or transmigration. which seems to me, is the mainstream thought on reincarnation.

all of these are very interesting to think about, not sure which i believe, definitely don't know...

cabinet-tech

last nite, my ex invited me over to fix the door on the kitchen sinkbase cabinet. i never used to be a handyman at home, but i evolved, and i liked it.

a cabinet-tech, in case you were wondering, is kindof a jack-of-all-trades in the cabinet business. i dint get paid very well when i was doing it as my only job, but i had alot of fun, and actually became quite handy.

i now own a variety of cool power tools, too.

it is also curious, how my ex-wife looks at me, after i do some handy work, or hang up a mirror or artwork...

Ex Ell See Ay or Em Jay?

it's beautifully hilarious, the code we learn in life.
i'm a coder myself, a programmer. and i like it, it's fun usually.
(the Pee See shtuff is usually not)

anyways, at my fav coffeehaus, they use a code to call drinks, right?
and it's not starbucks, but i like that place too, even tho i have a friend who attributes his adult-onset-diabetes to their drinks, and is looking to start a class-action thing, lol. (that pumpkin-spice latte was kinda addictive, somehow).

anyways, i walk in the coffeehaus, and the barrista calls out my name in greeting,
which i answer with his name, and a deep "how yooo doin?", in my best joey-voice.
we laugh and he asks: "Ex El Em Jay?" which prompts me for my extra-large morning drink of choice. i'm usually a chocoholic, but not today. "Ex El See Ay, please sirrah" which translates to a cafe aulait, in the extra-large variety...

i'm happy this morning, this place is the best.
plus there are beautiful women here every day...

lunchtime apocalypse

a bunch of us walked down to the philly steak house (which is a converted tacobell and very nostalgic for me, btw), and sitting outside one of us (not me) asks: "has anyone been feeling a little weird lately?" - which is a fantastic way to start an "out-there" conversation, in my humble opinion.

after the usual snarky comments about lifestyle choices, spousal-bodily-functions, and self-abuse, we got into the lunchtime apocalypse discussion.

turns out, a couple of us have been having strange premonitions of disastrous change.
and so, we all shared a little bit of what we are/were thinking on this subject, possible economic impact of said changes, and how fun it all might be.

possibilities: asteroid, the yellowstone caldera, fall of the western empire.
(personally i dint offer one, but continued making snarky comments, as necessary)

JOKE OF THE DAY:
first guy: hey dood, didja get your tickets yet?
other guy: uh, to what?
first guy (holding up his arms and flexing): to the gun show, dood, lol.

btw, that is not MY joke of the day, i almost missed the punchline, cuz it sucked.
i guess it's from a tv show... another reason to kill that box.

Update: ack, that was from a tv show, dammit.
and i just can't have that kinda thing...
stricken, it is.

meditating, again.

i've started meditating, again.
nothing unusual, just some breathing: in, out, repeat ad infinitum...
oh, and a little chanting.

probly disturbing to my adjacent apartment dwellers, no doubt.

star wars & ice ages

okay, i'm a fan of star wars, period. fan is a derivative of fanatic, sure-sure... ( i have only worn a costume to one movie, ever; it was rocky horror night, so shoosh! slashdot has a link, too ).

and when my twins and i saw the trailer, before robots, we ALL gasped "cool! we gotta see that!".

and the next ice age is coming too. woohoo!

oh, and speaking of robots;
shake-u-tronic
- coming to your local theatre or restaurant, soon.

update: hehe, and i thought... nevermind, just go read this. hehe

what's my sign?

okay, this might turn into a rant. i kinda feel a rant coming on, but i will try to rein in the urge. but as we all know, when you try to hold something back, it tends to fight harder to get out, so...

once again, alone on a friday night, i end up at a bookstore.
(feel free to psycho-analyze that, i'm okay with it)
i tend to start either in scifi or software, although if i'm feeling the "need" to enlighten myself, i may start in the classics. eventually, i will wander to the religion / spirituality section, as i did last night.

fridays, i suppose, are a good night for self-help and/or book clubs to meet. at least i assume that this particular group of women (and a gentleman who appeared to be attached to one of them, and possibly asleep behind dark glasses) was one of those two. they were all arranged around either the author, or the organizer - at any rate she was a good speaker, able to project and modulate her voice, and such. the gist of most of the conversation seemed to be about relationships.

i was eavesdropping from the taoist section, and she started in on horoscopes, which are fun to think about (to me), if not necessarily accurate. well, she started with the earth signs and caught my attention, as i'm the bull. she went down the list of all our supposed bad traits, and it was the usual list: stubborn, bossy, sexy, etc., and she proceeded to smackdown each of the signs, grouped by their elemental category, until she arrived at her own sign, aries. which she became apologetic for, and told some story about biting her dads finger, and how he deserved it for not listening to her. so, i pretty much quit listening at that point, as the tantric meditation book i was perusing got more interesting than her story.

now, i'm not sure what my point is here, let alone what hers was. what i took away was that, in relationships, most people just want to stick you in a box that they've built, and are comfortable with. if you stay in the box, they like that, becuz they can control you and they know what to expect from you.
if you get out of your box, they bite you.

maybe i should have gone drinking...

lingo, lengua, jargon, jingo, and java

synchronicity, again...

it seems i can count on little strands of my life interlinking into a web of interesting daily events. up-close these may not seem to have any relation to each other, and outside-looking-in they may make no sense to you. but, i see the web of connections in almost everything around me...

lemme splain, no, lemme summup:
i used a bit of someone else's lingo, cuz i like her lengua,
and another friend sent me a technical article, which used an awful lot of jargon, and he is kindof an evangelista, or jingo,
about the java language...

lingo - area specific usage of the lengua, language, or tongue
lengua - tongue or language
jargon - work, career, or arena-specific usage of obscure language
jingo - an interjection of surprise or emphasis, or an avid patriot
java - coffee and my language of choice for software

well, it makes sense to me...
(in some bent universe sort of way)
please don't tell...

i'm at the coffeeshop, my last "free" weekday, as i start my new gig on monday. and a "Roar!" comes from the other end of the room, it's friday, and here at the coffeeshop:
FRIDAYS ROCK! lol.

i'm as shy as a shrimp, i'm as tough as a tiger, i'm as busy as a bee, i'm as lazy as a lizard,
i'm AS LOUD AS A LION! ROAR!
hehehe

it's a kids storytime club, and it's one of the best times of the week. it should have been on the top of my list about things i love about this coffeeshop, but i think i had just kinda forgot about it. all these kids ( and their moms ), singing the coolest songs for kids.
my kids are too old for this stuff now, but it brings back fond memories.
(and the moms are gorgeous, too, lol - yeah, it's a guilty pleasure and i'm enjoying it).

"3 billy goats gruff" is rocking us now, didn't realize it could rock so hard...

steve jobs: thinks different

gotta admire that steve jobs guy,
and pixar (aintitcool) - cool beans...
*sigh*

a little bit of desperation

worked out last nite at the gym, coffeeshop this morning, lunched at my messy apt, got my hair cut, back to the coffeeshop, reading blogs ( see the sidebar ), thinking about my life of quiet desperation and feeling a bit lonely...

but, there are things happening elsewhere, that i happen to be connected to:
- warblogs describing 'real-life' that i have never known, but feelings i share.
- a well-known actor describing the joys of coming home to his family at the end of the day, and i have known that joy as well.
- a professor describing her experience sitting "on the other side" of the audience, in a classroom, watching another professor struggle with his emotions at the podium. and i can relate to that too, the watching, and the struggling to maintain composure in front of others when your inner ocean is raging.
- a beautiful young lady talks about an ex, and betrayal, and punishment. and i've felt the force of karma, and been betrayed as well.

and, now i'm just thanking whatever gods watch over me, for today, and for those people. cuz maybe we do all live in quiet desperation, but we are all connected thru this. and remembering that, it doesn't seem quite so desperate.

when the girl served my tea, and we talked about her being pregnant, and starting cravings, and that she was glad she wasn't having "morning/afternoon/daylong sickness" anymore. i shared my pics of my twins, and how my ex would eat a bushel of green-apples with salt every week during her pregnancy. and i shared my favorite story about my twins, when my daughter would do all the talking, and my son would reply with his "okay" (wisdom of youth). and, they would unlock the frontdoor and toddle out to ride their pushbikes, diapers only, and i would follow, reading my book... perfect little yin and yang in motion.

simply, let me say that i wish you all well, thanks for sharing yourself with me. i pray for all of us, not in church of course, but when i get to the top of a hill i like to hike, and look at the sun, and say thanks.

just wanted to share a little back... it's a good day for it.

arctic ribbon

if you have any concerns on the arctic,
please take a sec to check this out...

forgotten but not lost

after i finished that yawner "Baudolino", i was looking for something else to read (becuz the current list consists of books i can only read a bit at a time. and, lo and behold! next to the couch, under some papers, are both "Lady Chatterley's Lover" and "The Ramayana". so, i read a little of each one last nite, and then stuck them back under the papers (save for later, hehe).

fish balls

okay, this is random, i was reading blogs,
and then, i searched for something, and then i clicked on this,
and somehow i ended up on fish balls.

i think the web is completely, totally, incredibly, effen amazing...

dubya - what the heck?

okay, i'm pretty apolitical, but does dubya think he's fooling anyone?
i mean, what the heck? can anyone say "redirection"? (don't mention petroleum, the war, gas prices, the budget, or the arctic, sir).

my nose is smarting, from being led in so many directions.

aha! i'm trendy!

apparently, spending too much time in coffee houses is a trend:
aha! i'm trendy!

can't put 'em down

okay, so i read alot. maybe too much?

and for some reason, when a book is not totally captivating me, i have to pick up another. ( i also absolutely love bookstores, but that's another story entirely ), and i can't just stop reading the first one, i have to finish it eventually, even if it sucks.

so, at the moment, i'm reading several books:
Baudolino, by Umberto Eco, Dragons of Eden by Carl Sagan, Hope is Not a Method by Gordon Sullivan, BioInformatics for Dummies, and I just finished VALIS by P.K.D. and Quicksilver by Neil Stephenson. (yes, i'm repeating myself, at the moment those are on my sidebar, i know).

so, my thoughts on each of these:
  • Baudolino
  • - I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS IS THE SAME GUY who wrote Foucault's Pendulum (read the reviews, i'm not alone). I struggled thru his "Island..." too, and I just want to scream "NOT AGAIN!". Plus, I'm the kind of IDIOT who won't skip to the end, and won't quit reading a bad book, for some reason...

  • Dragons of Eden
  • - I like Carl Sagan, but, like in "Demon Haunted World", this is info-overload for me.

  • Hope is Not a Method
  • - books like this make me wish I was a leader, but I'm not, second-in-command maybe. :)

  • BioInformatics for Dummies
  • - love the Dummiez books, and with a degree in biology, a minor in computer science, and 17 years of programming, it's something I enjoy reading and taking notes on, lol.

  • VALIS
  • - I feel a strange bond with Phillip K. Dick, his interests, his exegesis, etc. (can't explain it)

  • Quicksilver
  • - i read this straight thru, no putting it down, stayed up too late some nights, picked it up in the morning, walked to the kitchen, fixed breakfast, etc. Can't wait for the second in the baroque series to come out in paperback.

eh, so i'm trying to finish Baudolino, and i'm just hating it.
the book is just so empty, and rambling - it's almost as bad as "The Island of The Day Before".
what happened to the guy who wrote "Name of the Rose" and "Foucalt's Pendulum" ?
cuz this ain't him.

oh, even tho i'm reading all this stuff, not counting the five books i'm re-brushing-up-on for my new job (jsp, servlets, spring, struts, etc) - i still took my son to the bookstore after dinner, just to hang out, lol.

snarky

snarky - how effen cool is that word? (the link is fun, but totally unrelated). also from dictionary.com which i'm not sure is how i was thinking of it...

here are some blogs i've read this morning, and in the best "name-dropping" sense, i'd like to say that they suck tons less than mine:
wil wheaton is impressive, can i get on his bandwagon too?
bloggermann - who is this guy? lol. i enjoyed his writing, and viewpoint, but have never watched his show, sorry.
the cerebral outpost has a catchy name, and i really enjoyed the security story.
gwen stefani's blog was disappointing. for some reason i thought she would actually be interesting. (not that i am). maybe she doesn't write it? hmm...
forbe's has a list of best blogs, which i'm working my way thru...
dr. kaye trammell actually researches and did her doctoral dissertation on blogs - wowzers!

and finally robotwisdom.com. and i just don't know how to describe it... (there is a link to susiebright there, too).

oops! i failed to mention a very hot spot, which i've been reading every day: A View from a Broad. (oh, and jenn, you are on the sidebar and the effen link is to you as well... ;)

market street

things i love about this coffee house:

- in my neighborhood, and i can walk to it.
- free wifi.
- kosher.
- artwork on the walls, all from unknown artists, is for sale.
- comfy couches and chairs, in a cozy arrangement.
- most of the employees are in indy bands.
- down the stripmall is a spin-center.
- beauties walk in, hang out, and mix with all the geeks with our laptops.

introspection

i seem to be gnawing away at this again, and again, and again...

so, here it goes, todays version of what i think about me :
- first born son, no brothers, two sisters ( hi ! )
- alcoholic inheritance (not manifest)
- lack of trust, exhibits slight paranoia
- seeks approval, yet resents authority (father issues)
- critical of others, caretaker, fixer (codep)
- yelling, unfair in confrontation, cowardice (weak will)
- talented, even artistic, but lazy
- good health
- likes to solve problems and/or find solutions
- likes to be physical, hands-on
- a good thinker and a mediocre philospher
- great capacity for love & compassion, yet hides a darker, cruel side
- loving father
- boring husband (could be why i'm not one now ;)

things that i've done (or am doing) :

cell memory

Okay, I've just finished reading P.K.D.s VALIS, and it spurred some thoughts.
First, it seems completely unproductive to think about "what we are" and "where we come from".
Fun, but still, maybe I'm just feeling overly cynical.

Earth - a cell.

If we consider the Gaea theory ( i think that's what it's called ), and view our planet as a living entity, a cell if-you-will. And all "life" on the planet as some type of "organelle" or part of one, with species serving some common purpose or whatever. What does that make us? Homo Sapiens.

Perhaps our original purpose, as a species-organelle, was/is some type of memory structure, a coil or helix of memory structure. And by simply breeding we continue the "race-conciousness" which serves as Gaea's memory banks (akashic blah-blah). Mutations and inbreeding create faulty "hardware/wetware" and are eventually removed from the system by not ultimately contributing to the gene pool. Dreams are effectively memory tests, reviews, and/or backups (contributing to the overall system memory after review). Not sure my analogy is clean here.

Now, the problem is, we have developed a cancer (some might say we are the cancer). Some of us have started destroying our own cellular entity (Gaea). Maybe that is the "original sin", developing the knowledge of right and wrong (choice) has caused our dysfunction?

And now that the cancer is present, the entity will inevitably die from it. Cancer may go into remission, but unless the cause is excised, it will inevitably come back. blahblahblah.

fad du jour

I am also reading "Hope is Not a Method", a book my dad lent me when I lost my job. There is a statement "an indicator of managerial panic is the consumption rate and shelf life of business fads" (Pascale, R), and Sullivan relates that to books as well: "if the growth of business-book publishing is a similar mirror, we are surely bordering on epidemic panic today as industrial age models increasingly fail to measure up to the needs of the new century".

And I was thinking about that, as I was wandering around a bookstore recently. Not only in the business book section, but in the programming book section, and in the spirituality section, not to mention the self-help section, there is just a huge number of fad-books...

sunday sun

is it just me or is the sun significantly brighter on sundays? lol.
for some people it may be the toll of friday and saturday nights,
but i didn't drink last nite, and it's killing my eyes today...

transitions end

so, i got a new contract... transitions end.

i was thinking about doing some writing on "searching for new meaning in the new technical marketplace" or some shite, but now it's kinda moot. not completely, but since i'm all set up for another job, just like the others, it is what it is.

so, my organization was going to be a bit like this:
i. introduction - dotcoms, dotbombs, and 911.
- dotcom: an exciting idea funded by someone elses money.
- dotbomb: exciting idea that failed miserably (analyze later).
- 911: the advent of fear, just recovering.
ii. backgrounder - losing stuff (job, marriage, meaning)
- all three happened to me, not necessarily in that order.
iii. status - sitting in a coffee shop, day after day
- waking up
iv. plan: - finding new meaning, finding success, finding (something)
- self-criticism, self-discovery, self-healing
v. conclusion - body, mind, soul ( or: fire.water.wood.earth.air )
( or: the 5 things: my version of magic 7 +/- 2; cuz i can only deal with five, lol ).
thought about exploring the ideas or trends that have defined my life so far...
things like: art, biology, computers ...OR... body, mind, soul ...OR...

* there must be some common yearning here; the infamous midlife crisis or whatever.
is it most men or most people that actually encounter this? wish i knew the stats on that.
it's this soul-searching thing: what have i accomplished? what will i leave behind? i don't particularly want to spend much time on introspection, i'd rather just start doing something...
and then either redo it, or undo it, or enjoy it, lol.

random thoughts about place:
- silicon valley: software & computers
- new york: finance & fashion
- washington d.c: government & politics
- las vegas: gambling & prostitution
- phoenix: dirt & heat (lol)
- ? : energy : ?

personality profile: romantic:dreamer:artist:philosopher:rebel
but; apolitical, areligious, and apathetic (without a path)

too much time in coffee shops

i don't know if the title is true or not.

i've been in this place almost every day, since I lost my job on the 1st.
One of the "career-change" guides suggested getting out of the house by 8am every day, as if you were going to work, and this place is close, convenient, and cozy. lol.

another benefit, for the sake of my sanity, is that I get to see a bunch of people I know from the neighborhood every day. Chat a bit, eat a bit, surf the net a bit...

all in all, a good morning starts here every day... or vice-versa.
